Modeling good reading behaviors helps emergent readers know what they are working toward. This is probably something you already do in your classroom. Listed below some researched ways improve your reading instruction.
Reading aloud to students teaching them the appropriate tone and expression to use. When reading, stopping to ask questions and thinking out loud using context clues shows students how to bring these practices into their independent reading. Fluency also helps students comprehension but beware not to mistake fluency with comprehension. Students will good fluency can lack comprehension skills as well.

A recent study that consisted of having positive community volunteers visit a classroom once a month to read to students lead to an increased development in student comprehension skills (Russel, 2013). These volunteers would read books that highlighted desirable character traits such as respect, honesty, and courage. Over the course of the school year, student reading skills improved as will as behavior.
