Students Helping Students
Students can be some of the best resources when it comes to improving reading. There are several ways in which students can help.
Buddy Reading is a great way to help students improve in reading overall. This is when students sit side by side and take turns reading a book. This is helpful because students have the opportunity to work through unfamiliar words together and practice many of the reading skills that the teacher has modeled for them.

Peer Reading is another helpful idea teachers can employ in their classrooms. Carol Bartholomew, an elementary school teacher in Alaska started a unique reading program in her community. In her program, her third grade students took a trip to a local preschool once a month. During this field trip, the older students would read to the younger students. By the end of the school year, both groups reading skills improved significantly.

Giving students the opportunity to read with out teacher interference, allows students to practice independently, develop confidence, and in certain situations teach others.
