Art of Comprehension
(AOC)
Improve your students reading comprehension without using text at all. Trevor Bryan, an elementary school teacher, has developed a comprehension improvement program that not only improves student's performance, but also is being implemented in schools across the country.

How it works.
Art of Comprehension (AOC) gets students to view a picture and comprehend the piece just as the would a text. This is a whole class type instruction. The class list and discuss what they see, sharing thoughts and opinions. Together the class uncovers related themes, and what the picture is trying to convey.

This practice improves comprehension skills, but also improves social skills. Sharing what they see in the pictures allows students to state their opinion and why they feel that way. Such interaction paves the way for understanding and accepting differences in opinions and perspectives.
